Two Cerro Coso students, Joshua Baca and Nadeem Alim, have been awarded the Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship though Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year colleges.

The Leaders of Promise scholarship program provides new members of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society with financial resources to help defray educational expenses while enrolled at a two-year college. Up to 180 scholarships of $1,000 each are awarded nationally every year based on applications submitted by members.

Baca is a sophomore at Cerro Coso's Ridgecrest campus. He plans to graduate from Cerro Coso in the fall of 2014 and transfer to UC Berkley to complete a Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering ultimately working in renewable energies. Baca believes, "To be a voice for others, great leaders need to be great listeners."

Alim is a professional writer and an online student at Cerro Coso. He is majoring in Liberal Arts (Arts & Humanities, Math & Science, and Social & Behavioral Sciences) and expects to graduate with all three degrees in the fall of 2014. His future plans include getting a Bachelor's in Communications from California State University, Fullerton. Encouraging other students, Alim says to "Go for it! Only the best students around the world get invitations to join Phi Theta Kappa. If you have been approached by this prestigious honor society then don't let the opportunity pass you by. As for the Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise scholarship, I know they have a refined selection process but that's what makes winning even more special."

Recipients for the award are chosen by an independent team of judges.
