A half-day conference for college students considering careers in the medical and health professions will be held on February 8, 1-4 p.m. at California State University Bakersfield Doré Theater. Co-sponsored by CSUB, Kern Medical Center, Kern Community College District, and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, the event provides students the chance to meet and hear medical professionals and interact with health personnel in hands-on workshops. The conference is designed to help students prepare for admission to schools of medicine, nursing, and pharmacy, and graduate programs for physical therapy, physicians assistant, laboratory science, and radiology technology. The event and parking are free.

Kern Medical Center (KMC) is offering an interactive lecture and workshop experience for college students regarding opportunities for health care graduate schools and subsequent careers in medical and health fields. College students will have the opportunity to discover how to prepare for admission to schools of medicine, nursing, and pharmacy, and graduate programs for physical therapy, physicians assistant, laboratory science, and radiology technology. Students will be able to interact directly with health care professionals in these fields and receive information about program availability throughout the USA. Students will receive printed or electronic information during the workshops on health care career tracks. Information about how to prepare an admission application and financing a health career education will be addressed.

The three hour program has two components:

  1. A lecture format presenting a variety of outstanding health care professionals, including representatives from The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA (1-2:30 PM).
  2. Workshops—some provide live demonstrations. Most workshops, however, are interactive, and promote conversations between college students and health career admission, training, and finance professionals. KMC medical residents and medical students (including those from UCLA) and a variety of outstanding health care practitioners will be present to provide the above information about training and careers in medicine and health (2:30-4 PM).
