Ridgecrest, CA - Life is full of choices and paths that often lead to unplanned detours. For those who embrace the detours, the paths can lead to exciting and unexpected life altering experiences. This was the case for new English faculty member, Melanie Jeffrey.
Melanie grew up in the Los Angeles area in a large family with six brothers and four sisters. She started out in her adult life thinking she was a hairdresser who loved Shakespeare. When she enrolled in classes at Antelope Valley Community College, as a re-entry student, her plan was to study forensic pathology. What she discovered was a passion for creative writing and English.
Melanie has a Bachelor's Degree in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing from UCLA, and a Masters in Creative Writing and Writing for the Performing Arts from the University of California Riverside.
She loves community colleges and finds that they are wonderful places for self-exploration that opens doors that may have never been considered for students. That is why she chose to return to Antelope Valley Community College and teach when she earned her degrees. She has also taught for Brandman University and the University of Phoenix.
Melanie joined the Cerro Coso faculty this fall as a full-time English instructor. "Community colleges have a tremendous opportunity to make a huge difference in the lives of their students that believe they are on one path in life and discover other interests and paths," said Melanie. "College is an exciting time of learning and growth," said Melanie. "I am looking forward to watching my students discover their interests, values, and abilities that expand the opportunities available to them," she concluded.
