Star Party

Cerro Coso Astronomical BBQ and Star Party is this Friday

September 20, 2011

It's Astronomical Barbecue and Star Party time again at Cerro Coso Community College. The community loves this family friendly signature fundraising event when the community drives up the hill to the college to enjoy great food, live entertainment, and explore the beauty and wonders of space at the College's Dr. Alexis Shlanta Memorial Observatory.

The event will be held this Friday, September 23, 2011 beginning with a barbecue dinner from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the lawn in front of Cerro Coso's Learning Resource Center. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at Red Rock Books, Ridgecrest Chamber of Commerce, and the Cerro Coso Business Office. Dinner will include a grilled tri-tip sandwich or hot dog, potato salad, beans, drink, and dessert. Musical entertainment will be provided by Harmonic Bonding and Unconditional Life.

The Star Party will get underway at 7:30 p.m. at the Observatory where participants of all ages will be exposed to the night sky with the assistance of the College science faculty and the China Lake Astronomical Society. A van will be available for transportation for those desiring assistance. Major stars and constellations will be pointed out by college staff, students, and enthusiasts. There will be approximately 10 different telescope stations set up inside the Observatory compound for public viewing and education.

Local contractors and business have teamed up in support of the event offering sponsorships and great raffle donations. All proceeds will enhance the College's ability to provide the community with valuable services.
