Julie Cornett
Cerro Coso Campus
Julie Cornett has been selected by the Kern Community College District to the full-time position of Librarian at the Cerro Coso Community College IWV campus. Cornett is not new to the District, she has spent the last four years working as an adjunct Librarian/Instructor for the College's Eastern Sierra College Center and has assisted in meeting the Library needs of the College's online students.
Cornett worked to develop Learning Resource Centers at both the Bishop and Mammoth Lakes campuses and has taught Information Competency and Cultural Anthropology at the College. In addition to her work at Cerro Coso she also enjoyed meeting the library needs of the remote and rustic Deep Springs College near Westgard Pass.
Prior to her adjunct work at Cerro Coso, Cornett worked in a variety of academic and public libraries in various coastal cities of California including Santa Cruz, San Diego, and the San Francisco Bay Area while working on her degrees. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Cultural Anthropology from U.C. Santa Cruz, a Masters Degree in Library and Information Sciences from San Jose State University, and a Faculty Certificate in Online Teaching from Cerro Coso Community College.
Julie is a member of the Association of College and Research Libraries and the American Library Association. Her professional interests include: working with faculty to strengthen Learning Resource Center (LRC) and classroom ties to promote course-specific services and resources to students, distance education librarianship and instruction, LRC's working to promote student success and retention, social media in academic librarianship, and the future of books and periodicals.
Julie's personal interests include: contemporary fiction and short stories, singing, arts and crafts, and mountain biking. She also enjoys fine teas and ales.
Cornett replaces long serving librarian, Dennis VanderWerff who retired in May. "We are very excited and confident about the selection of Cornett to this position," stated James Fay, Vice President of Academic Affairs. "We recognize the important role our Learning Resource Centers play in providing access to information and the transfer of knowledge to our students and communities. Julie's part in developing Learning Resources Centers at our Eastern Sierra Center has been most valuable to those students. We consider ourselves to be very fortunate to now employee her expertise and leadership at the Indian Wells Valley campus which provides services to all of Cerro Coso's campuses and online students," concluded Fay.
