August 11, 2010

Cerro Coso Community College is offering Elementary Algebra, Math C050, at its South Kern Campus on Edwards Air Force Base. This is the prerequisite course for Intermediate Algebra, Math C055. Intermediate Algebra is the necessary mathematics course for graduating with an A. A. from Cerro Coso.

Michael Bonner, Director of Engineering for the Global Reach Combined Test Force at Edwards Air Force Base will instruct the class. This hybrid class will meet on-campus on Tuesdays, from 5:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., and students will independently study the subject online using the CourseCompass course management system. Professor Bonner is very experienced in teaching hybrid classes, and he enthusiastically looks forward to teaching Elementary Algebra this fall.

Thousands of different jobs require some knowledge of mathematics. From bankers, nurses, automotive mechanics, lawyers, to Air Traffic Controllers, and scientists, many jobs require the use mathematics on a daily basis; others rely on the general problem solving skills acquired in mathematics courses. Math is not something to be feared, it is about problem solving. Something everyone does on a daily basis. In this three unit course students will explore integers and rational numbers, solving equations and inequalities with one variable, operations involving polynomials, factoring polynomials, and graphing linear equations and inequalities in two variables.

Pre-Algebra is a prerequisite for the course and students must purchase a CourseCompass access code to participate in the online portion of the class. For more information on the class contact the College's Math Department Chair, Dean Bernsten at 760-384-6322.
