Cerro Coso's Law Enforcement Graduation

March 31, 2010

It was a proud day for twenty-one Cerro Coso Community College students who successfully completed the California Peace Officer Training Academy at the Kern County Regional Training Center in Bakersfield. This was the culmination of 840 hours of intensive instruction in the subject areas of: Community Policing, Criminal Law, Search and Seizure, Preliminary Investigation, Report Writing, Patrol Tactics, Firearms, Defensive Tactics, Physical Training and Vehicle Operations to name a few.

Graduates for the Academy were: Johnny Aldana, Andrew Avila, Joshua Bathe, Christopher Boston, Brenda Castillo, Steve Davis, Sean Fiser, Christopher Gonzales, Eril Hallmark, David Hamma, Mikeal Hocevar, Melanie Jones, Donpaul Keith, Phillip Lashley, Melvin Lee, Ralph Lomas, Warren Martin, Jason Mears, Ryan Pollack, Matthew Ronk, and Jesse Ward.

This course is certified through the California Commission of Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) which oversees the academy presenters. The instructional staff work in all aspects of the law enforcement community and are recognized subject matter experts in their chosen teaching field. Instructors are required to complete instructor development courses before teaching in the environment.

The academy is very demanding both physically and mentally and not all students make the end of the course, which makes the achievement of these graduates all the more special. These students have proven they have the right skills and abilities to begin a career in law enforcement. Roughly 80% of the graduates have already started the process of testing with law enforcement agencies within Kern County.

Present for the Graduation was College President, Dr. Mary Retterer, who commended the graduates on their success.

"The Public Safety Department at the college is proud to be a part of this vital training," stated Steve Busby, Professor & Director of Public Safety at Cerro Coso Community College.
