Auditions for "Rhinoceros"

January 7, 2010

Theatre is back on campus at Cerro Coso this spring. The Theatre Department will be producing Rhinoceros by Eugene Ionesco this semester. Rhinoceros is a masterpiece of the Theatre of the Absurd, a theatrical style developed in the 1950s and 60s that focuses on the meaning of life. Rhinoceros is a dark comedy about a strange turn of events in a small, provincial French town. In a mass display of conformity, the residents begin to transform into rhinoceroses. The central character, Berenger, a flustered "everyman", is the only human not to conform. Humorous and thought-provoking, Rhinoceros is a celebration of individuality. Scripts are available in the college book store. The acting parts, as well as the technical requirements for this show are quite challenging.

Sign up for Theatre production (THEA C121) to audition for the play. No experience is necessary and many parts are available. Auditions will be held the first week of class. Sign up for Technical Theatre (THEA C131) to help out behind the scenes.

The college will also offer four levels of Acting Classes this semester. Sign up for THEA 111, 112, 211, or 212. The Acting courses will culminate in a final public showcase.

Directing, (THEA C230), will be also be offered this semester. The course focuses on the theory and process of directing, from play selection to performance. Students will develop directing techniques and skills by directing short dramatic works. The Directing Course will end with a competitive showcase this spring.

Introduction to Theatre, (THEA C101), will be offered online. Students will learn about the key players in the theatre, including the playwright, the director, the actor, and the designer. The course will cover many aspects of Theatre such as theatre history and dramatic literature.

The Cerro Coso Theatre Arts Club will also be back in action this semester. The Club offers all Cerro Coso students the opportunity to participate in Theatre events and activities such as Coyote Idol and the annual trip to Los Angeles.

The spring 2010 semester officially starts on Monday, January 18 which is a Federal Holiday; classes will convene on Tuesday, January 19. Visit the Cerro Coso College website at www.cerrocoso.edu for a full list of courses and plan your spring 2010 class schedule.
