Cerro Coso's Special Services Program Celebrates EOPS' 40th Year

December 16, 2009

The Cerro Coso Community College Special Services Program recently celebrated the establishment of the Statewide Extended Opportunity Program & Services (EOPS) 40th year anniversary. "It was wonderful to listen to Susan Smith, the previous Director of Special Services share the history of how EOPS came into existence and the life changing stories given by previous and current EOPS students was powerful," stated Penny Talley, Director Special Services, Cerro Coso. "Even amidst the budget cuts, we know the major impact that EOPS provides to academically and economically disadvantaged college students is indeed very valuable and must continue. We really appreciated the support of the many staff and community members that participated in this special event. A special thank you to Albertsons for donating the cake, Wal-Mart for providing paper products and Sizzler for supplying drinks and ice cream," continued Talley.

The newly established membership dues scholarship to the prestigious Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is open to EOPS students that are eligible ( those holding a 3.5 grade point average). The Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society membership is a tremendous advantage to students opening up doors to scholarships and transferring to Universities. A scholarship fund through the Cerro Coso Community College Foundation has been established for qualified EOPS students for the Phi Theta Kappa Membership dues of $75.00. Interested individuals are encouraged to sponsor a student(s), please contact Joann Clark, CCCC Development office at 384-6230.
