Cerro Coso to Offer Digital Media Arts Courses this Fall at ESCC

The Fall semester at Cerro Coso - Eastern Sierra College Center is right around the corner, beginning August 25. Among the courses offered at the Mammoth campus are Interactivity and Interface Design with Flash (DMA C115) and Digital Video Production (DMA C131). Digital Photo Retouching with Photoshop (DMA C103) is being offered at the Bishop Campus.

In the Interactivity and Interface Design with Flash (DMA C115) class students will learn the fundamentals of Web animation and interactivity with Adobe Flash CS3. No prior knowledge of the software is required. This course also provides students with an analysis of multimedia interactivity, including the psychology of user interaction and methods for designing and developing effective navigational interfaces. This course meets Wednesday evenings from 6:45-9:25 pm in Room 217 at the Mammoth Eastern Sierra College Center of Cerro Coso. It is 4 units, and the enrollment fee is $80. Required textbooks: Norman, D. (2002). The Design of Everyday Things, 1st Edition. Basic Books. The other text is by Green, T., Stiller, D. (2008). Foundation Flash CS3 for Designers. Berkeley, CA.

Suzie Ama is the instructor for DMA C115. Ama has been teaching at Cerro Coso Community College since 1998. She has 21 years of experience in the field of graphic design, including ownership of a small design firm for 8 years. In addition to producing print design products such as business cards, stationery, brochures, and product packaging, she has designed web sites and interactive media for companies across the country. She has a Bachelors of Fine Arts from American InterContinental University and a Masters of Science in Education from California State University East Bay.

The Digital Video Production course (DMA C131) introduces students to digital video production techniques including camera operation and procedures, basic principles and techniques of sound and scriptwriting, and digital video editing. There will be opportunities for students to collaborate and work on community projects in this course. This course meets Tuesday evenings from 6:45-9:25 pm in Room 217 at the Mammoth facility, Eastern Sierra College Center of Cerro Coso. It is 2 units, and the enrollment fee is $60

Ray Hocker is the instructor for DMA C131. Hocker has a Masters of Fine Art in Digital Cinema Production from National University. He has recently produced high definition video programming on several cable channels and teaches Video Technology at Burroughs High School in Ridgecrest. He was also a portrait photographer for many years. Hocker is excited about offering digital video courses in Mammoth because of the opportunities that local scenery and community events provide as subject matter for student projects.

The Digital Photo Retouching with Photoshop (DMA C103) course provides beginning through intermediate concepts in digital photograph retouching techniques, including correcting color, tone, saturation, sharpness, and distorted or damaged areas of a photograph with various Photoshop techniques. Students will also learn how to apply common photographic special effects and prepare color images for output. This course meets Tuesday evenings from 6:45-8:20 pm in Room 120 at the Bishop Eastern Sierra College Center of Cerro Coso. It is 2 units, and the enrollment fee is $40.

Required textbooks: Eismann, K. & Palmer, W. (2006). Adobe Photoshop Restoration and Retouching. New Riders Press and the other text is: Eismann, K. (2004). Photoshop Masking and Compositing. New Riders Press.

Vickie Taton is the instructor for DMA C103. She holds a Bachelors of Fine Art in Painting from the University of Nevada Reno. She also teaches digital imaging and design at Big Pine High School. She loves digital media and enjoys helping students develop their creative skills.

All three courses are offered in a hybrid format—part of the course is delivered in a classroom computer lab and part of it is delivered online. This provides students with the benefits of in-person instruction and hands-on experience, while reducing required in-class time to accommodate students' work or family schedules and reduce commuting costs. Students can complete online assignments from home or in the open computer labs at either the Bishop or Mammoth campuses.

Students are not required to purchase software, as it will be available in the computer lab. However students may wish to purchase software for use at home. Academic discounts are available for software purchase and student can learn more at the first class meeting.

The course registration number for DMA C115 is 73098, the registration number for DMA C103 is 73240, and the registration number for DMA C131 is 73099. Students can register at either the Bishop or Mammoth campuses or call 872-1565 or 934-2875 to enroll.
