Rotary Supports "I'm Going to College" Event at Cerro Coso
May 5, 2008
The
Cerro Coso Community College Counseling Office hosted an "I'm Going to
College" event for local fifth graders on Thursday, May 1 through the
donations of the China Lake Rotary. Each year the Rotary Club of China
Lake donates $1,000 to sponsor the "I'm Going to College" event at the
College.
Approximately 225 5th grade students from Las Flores, Richmond, Inyokern,
Immanuel and St. Ann's elementary schools attended the event. The 5th
graders were on campus to learn about the opportunities that await them at
Cerro Coso Community College. The 5th graders were welcomed by Cerro Coso
president Dr. Retterer; and vice-president of Student Learning, Dr. James
Fay.
The 5th graders were given tours of the campus by members of the Cerro Coso
student body (Student Ambassadors and Student workers, and Student
volunteers). The fifth graders enjoyed three different demonstrations given
by Dick Benson, Professor of Art; Debby Kilburn, Professor of Computer
Information Systems; and Shannon Bliss, Associate Professor of Biology.
The
students enjoyed sack lunches prepared by the Coyote Kitchen crew. The
College Bookstore provided bags for each student to carry their Cerro Coso
goodies in.
"This event is tailored to excite and encourage students to attend college.
In addition, it assists and familiarizes students with the different
opportunities that are available to them when they decide to attend
college," stated Karee Hamilton, Counselor.
