Web Design and Digital Cinematography Courses offered this spring at ESCC

January 10, 2008

The Spring semester at Cerro Coso Community College is right around the corner, beginning January 21. Among the courses offered this Spring at the Bishop and Mammoth campuses of the Eastern Sierra College Center are Fundamentals of Web Design (MA C101) and Digital Cinematography (MA C168). Both courses satisfy requirements in the Web Design and Digital Animation certificate and associate degree programs at Cerro Coso.

Fundamentals of Web Design (MA C101)

In this course, students will acquire skills to create and develop attractive web pages and will learn to use Adobe Dreamweaver CS3, a leading web development software application that enhances productivity. Students will collaborate in small groups to critique existing sites according to design principles, and they will work individually to develop their own web site. This is an entry-level course, so prior knowledge of web design or HTML coding is not required. However, students who already have some HTML skills, but who are still designing with tables, can also greatly benefit from this class. Students will learn how to entirely control the layout of a page with Cascading Style Sheets and will learn the benefits of doing so.

This class meets Tuesday evenings from 7:15-9:45 pm in Room 120 of the Bishop Eastern Sierra College Center of Cerro Coso.

Required textbook: Chow, G. (2008). Dreamweaver CS3: Hands-On Training. Berkeley, CA: Peachpit.
The textbook can be purchased at the Bishop Campus beginning Tuesday, January 15.

Vickie Taton is the instructor for MA C101. Taton has a Bachelors of Fine Art in Painting from the University of Nevada Reno. She also teaches digital imaging and design at Big Pine High School. She thoroughly enjoys teaching digital media and helping students develop their creative skills.

Digital Cinematography (MA C168)

This is a course in digital cinema planning and production through hands-on experience. Course topics include digital cinema as a distinct form of artistic expression; an investigation of the aesthetic, technological, economic, and social factors that contributed to the evolution of digital cinema; logistics, scriptwriting, sound recording, film and sound editing; and methods by which the visual and aural elements may be organized. The roles and responsibilities of the digital cinema producer will be examined, including; skills and knowledge required in developing, budgeting, managing, producing, and distributing programs.

This course meets Tuesday evenings from 6:45-9:25 pm at the Mammoth Eastern Sierra College Center of Cerro Coso.

Required textbook: Rabiger, M. (2007). Directing: Film Techniques and Aesthetics. Focal Press, 4th edition.
Textbook can be purchased directly from the Cerro Coso Bookstore online at: www.cerrocoso.edu/bookstore/textlists.htm.

Ray Hocker is the instructor for MA C168. Ray is currently completing a Masters of Fine Art in Digital Cinema Production from National University. He has recently produced high definition video programming on several cable channels and teaches Video Technology at Burroughs High School in Ridgecrest. He was also a portrait photographer for many years. Hocker is excited about offering digital video courses in Mammoth because of the opportunities that local scenery and community events provide as subject matter for student projects.

Both courses are offered in a hybrid format—part of the course is delivered in a classroom computer lab and part of it is delivered online. This provides students with the benefits of in-person instruction and hands-on experience, while also enabling them to build skills necessary for working in the virtual collaborative environments. Students can complete online assignments from home or in the open computer labs at either the Bishop or Mammoth campuses.

Students are not required to purchase software, as it will be available in the computer lab. However students may wish to purchase software for use at home. Academic discounts are available for software purchase and student can learn more at the first class meeting. The course registration number for MA C101 is 30688, and the registration number for MA C168 is 30596. Students can register at either the Bishop or Mammoth campuses or call 872-1565 to enroll.
