Cerro Coso ESCC to Offer Certified Nursing Assistant Training

Certified Nursing Assistant Training is now available locally! The Certified
Nursing Assistant (CAN) is a new course for the Bishop Campus. The Cerro
Coso Community College, Eastern Sierra College Center, Bishop Campus is
offering the 5 unit course beginning on October 5 through December 9. "This
class is being offered in response to the communities requesting this course
and in for the preparation of the Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) class
that is scheduled to start in January 2008," stated Cheryl Gates, Director
of Vocational Nursing and Allied Health Careers at Cerro Coso Community
College.
This course (HCRS CO55) develops the skills necessary to pass the State
mandated test to become a Certified Nurses Aide. Topics include legal and
ethical responsibilities, bedside care, moving and positioning resident,
general observations of a resident's condition and responsibilities related
to care of the elderly patient. Practical bedside skills are practiced by
the student in the nursing skills lab. The student gains experience in a
long term care facility. Yvette Matthiessen is the instructor for the
Certified Nurses Aide course.
The class will be held at the Bishop Campus in the "new" nursing skills lab.
The clinical experience component will be offered at Bishop Care Center.
This class provides the CNA certificate which is a prerequisite for the LVN
program coming in January to the Eastern Sierra College Center.
Students interested in taking the class should register
immediately. Students can contact College Counselor, Greg Kost at
872-1565 (Bishop Campus) or 934-2875 (Mammoth Campus) for additional
information. Enrollment is limited to 15 students.
