Phi Theta Kappa to Hold 2nd Induction Ceremony

May 3, 2007

Phi Theta Kappa will be inducting its newest members this Friday, May 4 at 6:00 p.m. in the foyer of the Learning Resource Center (Library). "A reception will immediately follow the brief ceremony, join us to celebrate our students' accomplishments and get to know our Phi Theta Kappans" stated Dr. Christine Swiridoff, Professor of English.

These 48 students have earned the privilege to join Phi Theta Kappa based on their academic excellence of earning at least a 3.5 grade point average, or better in at least 12 units of degree or transfer coursework, and complete an application to become life-long members of the world's largest honors society. Students have access to over $36 million in scholarships, and join an outstanding fellowship of scholars.

Several of this year's graduates will receive scholarships upon transfer to a four-year university. Phi Theta Kappa is an International Honors Society for community colleges with an emphasis on service. During the 2006-07 academic year, Cerro Coso's Beta Kappa Chi Chapter has raised thousands of dollars to send gift packages to the troops, donate money to cancer research, and feed needy families during the holidays.

Dr. Jane Harmon, Cerro Coso Community College's Interim Vice President of Student Learning, will be the keynote speaker.
