Cerro Coso to Offer Child Development Seminar Series

Cerro Coso Community College is offering a Seminar Series of five workshops
on Child Development beginning March 19. Each of the five two hour workshops
will be offered through interactive videoconferencing at the Cerro Coso
Community College location in Ridgecrest, Kern River Valley Campus, and the
Eastern Sierra College Center at both Mammoth and Bishop Campuses. Earn
one-half unit of college credit for attending and completing each of the
five workshops. Simply sign up for the CH DV C199L class at Cerro Coso
Community College in your town.
The first workshop is titled "Calming the Chaos"
and will be offered on Monday, March 19 from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. Both teachers
and parents will receive assistance in dealing with conflict in the lives of
children in a productive and effective manner. This class will be offered by
Tina French, Director of Inyokern and Pierce State Preschools & Staff.
The second workshop in the series is titled "Early
Literacy for Preschool Children: Parents Workshop". During this
workshop individuals will make their own book from a single piece of paper
and their fingerprints. Different types of hand-make books will be shown
from restoring a well used book to personalized books based around
photographs taken. This workshop will be presented on Wednesday, March 28
from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. by Gena Bowles, Director of Weldon State Preschool
and staff Chelly Wetteland.
"Creepy Crawling Creatures" workshop will be
offered on Monday, April 16 from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. Interested individuals
are encouraged to come and learn some great ideas for the insect theme.
Learn how to make an inexpensive butterfly cage. This workshop will be
presented by Cheryl Sager, Director of Woodrow Wallace Preschool, and head
teacher Verlona Tate from Lake Isabella.
The fourth workshop in the series is titled "Developmental
Delays". This workshop will deal with group and in-home services for
infants and children from birth through five years of age who have or are at
risk of developmental delays. The workshop will be offered on Wednesday,
April 25 from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. by April La Pierre, Director of the Theresa
M. Hall Children's Center Preschool and staffers Jamie Ludington and Deanna
Lukens.
"Seeing as the Child Sees" is the final workshop
in the Child Development Series and will be offered on Monday, May 7 also
from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. The visual development of children from infancy to
first years of school will be explored. Kay Kapler a vision therapist who
performs visual and perceptual assessments and public relations for Dr.
Penelope Suter, Optometry in Bakersfield will be the presenter.
Certificates of Professional Development will be given out to the workshop
