Community Colleges Have Lower Fees
November 21, 2006
Paying for your education just got a bit cheaper...thanks to the California
legislators. Community college fees will drop from $26 to $20 per unit
beginning January 1. Students who register at Cerro Coso Community College
now for the Spring 2007 will enroll at the $20 rate. The change comes from
state Assembly Bill 1802, signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger July 19.
Community colleges around the state saw a drop in enrollment when fees were
raised from $18 to $26 in fiscal year 2004-05, said Ron Owens, spokesman for
California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office. Kern Community College
District Chancellor Sandra Serrano praised the fee decrease as fitting for
the community college goal of providing access to local, affordable
education.
Dr. Mary Retterer, interim president at Cerro Coso Community College, said
the fee decrease will help students with other college expenses. "Our
students need every break they can get with respect to finances."
Students may register for Cerro Coso Spring 2007 classes on the web at
www.cerrocoso.edu. On-campus registration begins December 6, no appointment
is necessary.
Spring classes convene on January 20, 2007.
