Register Now for Classes Starting in September and October at ESCC

It's not too late to become a Cerro Coso Community College student. The College is currently registering students for late start classes that begin in September and October 2006. You may register at the Bishop Campus, located at 4090 W. Line Street, the Mammoth Lakes Campus, located at 101 College Parkway, or online at www.cerrocoso.edu/coyoteconnection. The following late start classes are being offered:

CHILD DEVELOPMENT – Admin of Programs in CHDV II, CHDV C252 – (Offered at both Bishop and Mammoth Lakes) - This is a 3-unit class, instructed by Mary O'Neal. Students will continue studying the principles, techniques and methods emphasizing leadership and advocacy roles in the management of Child Development programs. Topics covered include effective strategies for working with parents, staff development, and team building. Advocacy roles with staff, as a Center, and in the community are also explored. This Bishop and Mammoth Lakes class will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. until 9:10 p.m. beginning October 24, 2006 through December 12, 2006. This is an ITV class held concurrently between the Indian Well Valley, Kern River Valley, Bishop and Mammoth campuses, hosted at the IWV Campus. There is an online component to this class; students will participate 3.5 hours weekly. Prerequisite: Completion of nine units of Child Development course work or equivalent.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY – Emergency Medical Tech I-A Refresher, EMTC C205 – (Offered in Bishop) - This is a 1.5-unit class, instructed by Martha Reynolds. This course briefly covers all material covered in EMTC C105; with emphasis on demonstration of skills and updating information. Upon completion of the above objectives and passing the Final Exams, the student will receive a Certificate of Completion. This certificate allows the student to apply, or re-apply, for County certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-I. This Bishop class will meet on Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on September 30, October 1, 7, and 8.

ENGLISH – Improving Basic Writing Skills, ENGL C040 – (Offered in Bishop) - This is a 4-unit class, instructed by Christine Abbott. This course, which is preparation for College Composition, is designed to teach student to write short compositions (500-700 words each) with clear organization, development, keywords, thesis, topic sentences, and sufficient supporting details. Students will become familiar with a variety of rhetorical modes, be introduced to expository and text-based writing, and complete in-class compositions. Major and minor principles of grammar will be reviewed. This Bishop class will meet on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. beginning September 25, 2006 through December 13, 2006. Prerequisite: ENGL C030 or placement at Level 3 Writing.

ENGLISH – Grammar and Punctuation Refresher, ENGL C092 - (Offered at both Bishop and Mammoth Lakes) - This is a 2-unit class, instructed by Christine Abbott. This course is designed for students of all levels. Topics include recognizing sentence patterns, avoiding run-ons and fragments, knowing when to use the comma, correctly employing the minor punctuation marks of semicolon, colon, dash, and others. Some time will be spent on grammar's relation to style and a brief history of the English language. The Bishop class will meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. until 7:20 p.m. beginning September 25, 2006 through December 13, 2006. Prerequisite: The Mammoth Lakes class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:00 noon until 1:20 p.m. beginning September 26, 2006 through December 14, 2006. Prerequisite: Placement at Level 2 Writing.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT – Reading Improvement, PDEV C022 - (Offered in Bishop) – This is a 2-unit class, instructed by Julie Metz. This course is designed for students who experience severe reading or spelling difficulties. Students will learn auditory/phonemic awareness skills and gain the ability to think about and manipulate sounds important for success in reading and spelling. This course content is also appropriate for students who have difficulty completing the college's reading and spelling classes and ESL students who need additional auditory practice. This Bishop class will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. until 8:50 p.m. beginning September 26, 2006 through December 12, 2006.
