Register Now for Classes Starting in October at South Kern

It's not too late to become a Cerro Coso Community College student. The College's South Kern Campus on Edwards Air Force Base is currently registering students for late start classes that begin in October 2006. You may register on-campus at the South Kern Campus, located at 140 Methusa Avenue, Building 2453, Edwards AFB, from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday or register on-line at www.cerrocoso.edu/coyoteconnection. The following late start classes are being offered at the South Kern Campus:

ANTHROPOLOGY – Physical Anthropology, ANTH C121 – This 3-unit class, instructed by Mark Campbell, covers the introduction to human variation, past and present, as a part of physical and cultural evolution, including non-human primates, hominid fossils, population genetics and human cultural history. This class will meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. until 8:40 p.m. beginning October 23, 2006 through December 13, 2006. Advisory: Level 1 Reading, Level 2 Writing.

ART – History of Western Art II, ART C106 – This 3-unit class, instructed by Shirley Harrington, will study the historical development of painting, sculpture and architecture from Giotto (1300) to the present. This class will meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:15 p.m. until 8:25 p.m. beginning October 23, 2006 through December 13, 2006. Advisory: Level l Reading, Level 2 Writing.

ENGLISH – Freshman Composition, ENGL C101 – This is a 4-unit class, instructed by Marianne Doyle. In this composition course for transfer to four-year institutions, students write five to seven expository and argumentative essays, including a substantive research paper of 2,000 words showing the student's ability to analyze and evaluate source material and to generate and develop independent topics of inquiry appropriate to academic work (total: 7,000 words). The course emphasizes analyzing and actively engaging university-level concepts presented in outside sources. This class will meet Wednesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. until 9:45 p.m. beginning October 25, 2006 through December 13, 2006. Prerequisite: ENGL C070 or placement at Level 1 Writing. Advisory: Level 1 Reading. This is an accelerated, eight-week course that contains an online teaching component. The instructor will provide further details.

MATHEMATICS – Pre-Algebra, MATH C040 – This is a 4-unit class, instructed by Mike Reed. This course covers basic arithmetic, introductory concepts in algebra, and problem solving techniques. Specific topics include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of signed numbers, percentage, and applications of these skills. The course introduces algebraic concepts, including algebraic operations of polynomials, solving equations, formulas, and an introduction of solving word problems. This class will meet Wednesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. beginning October 25, 2006 through December 13, 2006. Prerequisite: MATH C020 or placement at Level 4 Math. This class is an accelerated, eight-week course that contains an online teaching component. Instructor will give details at first class meeting.

MATHEMATICS – Intermediate Algebra, MATH C055 – This is a 4-unit class instructed by Ernie Buckly. Intermediate Algebra expands on the skills learned in Elementary Algebra and prepares the student for more advanced work in mathematics and science. The focus will be on exponents, factoring, solving linear and quadratic equations, systems of equations, algebraic fractions, graphs of linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, radical determinants, function notation, and the exponential and logarithmic functions. This class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. beginning October 24, 2006 through December 14, 2006. Prerequisites: MATH C050 or MATH C051 and MATH C052, or one year of high school algebra with a grade of "C" or better. This class is an accelerated, eight-week course.

SOCIOLOGY – Introduction to Sociology, SOCI C101 – This is a 3-unit class, instructed by William Lund. This course covers the concepts and research findings of contemporary sociology; understanding human groups, such as the family, the play group, the work group, social class, institutions, mass behavior and culture. Discussion is centered on the effects of social change in an industrial society. This class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 p.m. until 8:50 p.m. beginning October 24, 2006 through December 14, 2006. Advisory: Level 1 Reading, Level 2 Writing. This class is an accelerated, eight-week course.

SPEECH – Elements of Speech, SPCH C101 – This is a 3-unit class, instructed by Janice Fisher. The Elements of Speech will cover the fundamentals of speech composition, gathering and using material, audience analysis and practical speaking experience. This class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 p.m. until 8:50 p.m. beginning October 24, 2006 through December 14, 2006. Advisory: Level 1 Reading, Level 2 Writing. This is an accelerated, eight-week course.
