Register Now for Classes Starting in September and October at IWV

September 14, 2006

It's not too late to become a Cerro Coso Community College student. The College is currently registering students for late start classes that begin the end of September and October 2006. You may register on-campus or online at www.cerrocoso.edu/coyoteconnection. The following late start classes are being offered:

BIOLOGY – N.H.S., East Mojave National Preserve, BIOL C164 – This is a 0.5-unit field trip, instructed by Janet Westbrook. This field course is a study in the Mojave National Preserve of the geology, the past and present climate and its effects on the area, ecology, the plants and the animals which inhabit the Eastern Mojave Desert and the human influences on these ecosystems. Field trip required. This class will meet on Saturday, September 30, 2006 through Sunday, October 1, 2006. Students must provide their own transportation. This class departs from the IWV Campus.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT – Community CPR and First Aid, CHDV C122 – This is a 0.5-unit class, instructed by Vivian Baker. In this course, students will gain working knowledge and skills for emergency action principles, wounds, shock, poisoning, burns, splintering, diabetic emergencies, infection, heart attack, temperature extremes, transportation, and bandaging. This one day class will meet on Saturday, September 30, 2006 from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT – Admin of Programs in CHDV II, CHDV C252 - This is a 3-unit class, instructed by Mary O'Neal. Students will continue studying the principles, techniques and methods emphasizing leadership and advocacy roles in the management of Child Development programs. Topics covered include effective strategies for working with parents, staff development, and team building. Advocacy roles with staff, as a Center, and in the community are also explored. This class will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. until 9:10 p.m. beginning October 24, 2006 through December 12, 2006. This is an ITV class held concurrently between the Indian Well Valley, Kern River Valley, Bishop and Mammoth campuses, hosted at the IWV Campus.

COMPUTER SCIENCE – Beginning Access, CSCI C125 – This 1-unit class is instructed by Karen O'Connor. This hands-on computer course is designed to provide an intermediate understanding of database programs. Fundamental relational database design and management as well as building and editing basic tables, forms, queries, and reports are introduced. This course begins preparation for the core level Microsoft Access Office Specialist certification exam. This class will meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:45 p.m. until 8:48 p.m. beginning October 23, 2006 through December 13, 2006.

COMPUTER SCIENCE – Intermediate Access, CSCI C155 – This 1-unit class is instructed by Karen O'Connor. This hands-on computer course is designed to provide an intermediate understanding of database objects and functionality. Advanced queries, table design, custom forms and reports are covered along with integrating Access with the web and other programs. This course completes preparation for the core level Microsoft Access Office Specialist certification exam. This class will meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:45 p.m. until 8:48 p.m. beginning October 23, 2006 through December 13, 2006.

COMPUTER SCIENCE – Advanced Access, CSCI C165 - This 1-unit class is instructed by Karen O'Connor. This hands-on computer course is designed to provide an advanced understanding of entry level creation and modification of database applications in business. Action queries, table relationship properties, automating tasks with micros are covered including Switchboard development. Visual Basic for Applications is introduced to enhance database construction and functionality. Managing with replication and synchronization as well securing with user level Security Wizard is included. This course prepares student to take the expert level Microsoft Access Office Specialist certification exam. This class will meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:45 p.m. until 8:48 p.m. beginning October 23, 2006 through December 13, 2006.

HEALTH CAREERS – Admin Med Asst-Financial Mgmt & Insurance, HCRS C062 – This 6-unit class is instructed by Denise Johnson. This course presents a thorough discussion of office finance management and insurance. Insurance coding and billing prepares the student to undertake the details necessary for implementing the specialized insurance forms utilized in the modern healthcare system. Lecture and practice exercises using assorted systems of billing and coding combine to provide the student with experience with using numerous health insurance claim forms. Included in the course insurance exercises are Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Medicaid-MediCal, CHAMPUS, Unemployment and Worker's Compensation, and Health Maintenance Organizations. This class will meet on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 4:00 p.m. until 6:33 p.m. beginning October 10, 2006 through December 14, 2006.

HEALTH SCIENCE – Community First Aid and Safety, HSCI C105 – This 0.5-unit American Red Cross course, instructed by Dana Alloway, will study basic first aid with discussions, demonstrations and practical experiences. The course will cover emergency action principles, wounds, shock, poisoning, burns, splinting, diabetic emergencies, infection, heart attack, temperature extremes, transportation and bandaging. The class also includes "Community CPR" – rescue breathing, CPR, choking skills for adult, child, and infant. This class will meet on Saturday, October 14, 2006 beginning at 7:30 a.m. through 5:30 p.m.

LIBRARY TECHNOLOGY – Intro to Library Research & Bibliography, LIT C075 – This is a 1-unit class instructed by Dennis VanderWerff. This course presents the fundamentals of the research process. The student is introduced to the organization of information in the library setting and access through the use of online catalogs. The use of the worldwide web is covered with particular emphasis on evaluation of information contained in web pages. The course covers the use of printed and electronic reference materials and discusses legal and ethical issues of intellectual property including copyright, fair use, and plagiarism. This class will meet on Saturday, September 30, 2006, October 14, 2006, and October 28, 2006 from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
