Cerro Coso Offering "English as a Second Language" Class

Ridgecrest, CA – August 22, 2006

Are you ready to learn English and have fun at the same time? Cerro Coso Community College is offering an English as a Second Language course entitled, "English Speakers of Other Languages II" (ENSL C021) for the Fall Semester. Classes begin the week of August 28th.

According to the 2000 census 1,287 (5.5%) residents of Ridgecrest speak English less than "very well." More than half or 661 of those speak it "not well" or "not at all." Cerro Coso Community College is offering this course for the many that want to learn the language or improve their skills.

This class is for students that are at a high beginning skill level. Students will learn English vocabularies and improve their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Using both spoken and written drills and exercises, students will learn and practice Basic English grammar. Needs and skills assessments will be given to determine personal goals.

Mrs. Alexia Svejda has moved back to the Ridgecrest area and will be teaching this 2-unit class. The class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. until 11:33 a.m. in Room 229. "This morning slot gives parents the chance to go to class while their children are in school," stated instructor Svejda.
"The books required for this class will be a wonderful asset as reference books once done with the class," stated Svejda. "Depending on the level of the student, students will be purchasing an illustrated vocabulary guide useful in everyday language or a grammar book that will help in expressing English in a clearer, more correct manner," she continued.

Students may register for ENSL C021 at the College Campus or on-line at www.cerrocoso.edu/coyoteconnection. For more information, call the College today at
