Ted Higle Named Cerro Coso's Spring 2006 "Student of the Semester"

Ridgecrest, CA – May 1, 2006

Ted HigleThe Alumni Association Board of Directors proudly announced their selection of Ted Higle as the recipient of the Spring 2006 "Student of the Semester" award and honored him at a presentation luncheon on April 25, 2006. The Cerro Coso Community College Alumni Association has been recognizing the outstanding achievements of Cerro Coso students each semester since 1988.

Higle attends the Cerro Coso Indian Wells Valley Campus and is currently enrolled in 12 units, has completed 51.5 units, and holds a 3.40 GPA. In addition to his busy schedule, Higle works 10 hours per week as a tutor in the College Learning Assistance Center, has tutored at a local elementary school, is a volunteer for the Salvation Army, President of the College Special Services Club, and recently won the College election for President of the Associated Student Body. Higle is majoring in Mathematics.

Higle was nominated by instructor, John Garcia. Garcia stated, "After having served in the Navy during Operation Desert Storm, Ted worked for awhile and then decided that schooling is what he lacked and Cerro Coso Community College was exactly what he needed. Ted finished my reading course with a very high "A," something that is not easy in my classes due to the extensive amount of reading and writing that I require. His work ethic, discipline to detail,
analysis during discussions and in his writings, as well as his respect towards me, and the
responsibility he took for making sure that he followed all areas of the syllabus was very commendable.

Aside from the excellent work Ted has done, he practices a nose-to-the-grindstone attitude in order to achieve his goals. Ted's educational goals include an A.A. Degree in General Education, to pursue a B.A. Degree in Math with a credential in teaching. Eventually, he wants to work on his Masters Degree and Doctorate in Math and one day become a professor at a major university. I am not only proud of what Ted has done the past few semesters, but I am also impressed at his level of energy, his enthusiasm in school, and his positive outlook for his future."

"The Alumni Association is very proud to bestow this award on Mr. Ted Higle acknowledging his dedication and many achievements by selecting him as the Alumni Association's Spring 2006 "Students of the Semester," stated Director of Information, Development and Alumni Relations, Joann Handeland. Higle was presented with a framed certificate of appreciation, an alumni pin, a $200 cash award, a special Cerro Coso logo remembrance gift, and his name and picture displayed at the College on the "Student of the Semester" bulletin board. His name was also added to a perpetual plaque honoring all recipients of this distinguished award.
Overall GPA, class participation, extracurricular activities, and community involvement were all considered in the selection process for this award. "The Alumni Association would like to congratulate Ted Higle on his many accomplishments and for being an inspiration to all Cerro Coso students and staff," stated Handeland.
