CCCC Special Services Program to Host Open House and Ribbon Cutting

Ridgecrest, CA – November 3, 2004

Cerro Coso Community College Special Services Program will host an Open House on Wednesday, November 17, 2004 from 10:00 am through 2:00 pm in the Special Services Program Office, mom 312. At 12 noon during the open house the Chamber of Commerce will be present to cut the ribbon for the Special Services Program. This Open House will give the community an opportunity to learn about and interact with the support services, EOPS/CARE, DSPS, and the High Tech Center that are available to current and prospective Cerro Coso Community College students.

Special Services includes three programs serving three distinct populations of students:

The Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOPS) targets the under represented student. The program assists students who have a financial need and who would not consider themselves being able to take advantage of a college education because they had not completed high school, had a low grade point average in high school, parents never attended college or have cultural barriers. The EOPS program provides an extensive counseling support system to acclimate the student to the college environment with additional support services of tutoring, campus activities, assigned counselors, and peer mentors. In addition, the EOPS program supports the student financially through a book voucher system for required textbooks.

The CARE Program is a supplemental program to EOPS for single parents. In addition to the support from EOPS the CARE program provides single parents with workshops, additional school supplies, gas vouchers, baby sitting for study time and a club that helps support the single parent through networking with other single parents coming to college.

The Disabled Student Program and Services (DSPS) provides accommodations for students with disabilities, This includes interpreters for the deaf, text books in Braille, adaptive computer software, assigned learning assistance to develop study skill strategies, mobility assistance, tutors, scribes, note takers etc. This program supports access to higher education for the disabled without compromising the rigor and integrity of a college education. Each individual receiving support through the DSPS program must have a verified disability.
