Cerro Coso Community College student Jennifer Spurlock is the recipient of a $1,000 Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) Association Scholarship.

Jennifer has been successfully juggling the responsibilities of college classes, maintaining a work study position, and being a single parent. This past year she has worked in the EOPS office as a Peer Mentor where she works one on one with students, providing support and encouragement. Jennifer's favorite part of the job is "helping people realize they can solve their own problems". Promoting a positive attitude with students, Jennifer always greets everyone with a smile.

A first generation college student, Jennifer understands the many challenges facing students like her in finishing a college degree. She advocates for other students and makes referrals to the different programs available to increase their resources for success.

Jennifer will be completing an AA degree in Liberal Arts, emphasis on Social and Behavioral sciences, at the end of the fall 2013 semester, and is preparing to transfer to a four year college to pursue a Bachelor’s degree. Her long-term goal is to work with students who have special needs in an educational setting.
