Cerro Coso receives $100,000 Grant from SCE

February 16, 2010

Southern California Edison (SCE) recently launched a $1 million Green Jobs Education Initiative to fund sustainable or "green" education and job training at 10 California community colleges, solidifying a commitment to its core philanthropic priorities – education and the environment. Ten colleges were selected to receive $100,000 each from SCE including Cerro Coso Community College. Cerro Coso Community College will invest these funds in the California Community College Scholarship Endowment to be matched by an additional $50,000 from the endowment's lead benefactor, The Bernard Osher Foundation.

Deborah Hess, local Public Affairs for SCE presented the $100,000 check to Cerro Coso president, Dr. Mary Retterer; Valerie Karnes, Dean of Technical Education and instructor/ department chair of the Industrial Arts Program, Larry Board. "This gift, plus the matching funds from the Endowment, will enable Cerro Coso to award a minimum of seven scholarships annually in perpetuity for students training for careers in Renewable Energy Technology. It will be a huge advantage to our students and to the local employers" stated Dr. Mary Retterer.
