CCCC Now Part of Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society
Ridgecrest, CA – March 15, 2006
Cerro Coso Community College just became part of Phi Theta Kappa, an
international honors society for community colleges, through the efforts of
Professor of English, Dr. Christine Swiridoff. "Students who participate in
this program, receive great opportunities as part of this organization, and
most importantly transfer scholarships", stated Swiridoff.
This opportunity is available to all Cerro Coso Community College students
at all of the campus sites, with at least a 3.5 grade point average. Phi
Theta Kappa is the international honor society of two year community
colleges, founded in 1918. Its mission is to encourage the academic
achievement of two year college students and provide development
opportunities through participation in leadership and service.
"Phi Theta Kappa in no way replaces our current Honors Program", Swiridoff
explained. Phi Theta Kappa is available to all students for work already
accomplished, with a multitude of different benefits for Cerro Coso
students. Some of the benefits of Phi Theta Kappa are the numerous
scholarships available to students, services and resources such as financial
assistance with insurance and health care, job search networks, letters of
recommendations to college admissions counselors, service and leadership
opportunities, etc.
All students, college-wide, who hold a 3.5 GPA or better in at least 12
units of degree or transfer coursework, complete an application, and pay the
one-time membership fee are eligible for membership in Phi Theta Kappa.
Students will be inducted into the honors society with a special ceremony,
be included in the National Dean's List publication of college honors
students, receive a golden key membership pin, receive a gold diploma seal
denoting membership, and special graduation regalia.
"All eligible Cerro Coso students will be receiving an invitation letter at
the end of March for an orientation session, explaining the benefits and
opportunities", continued Swiridoff.
